Take a look at the picture above; do you notice something out of the ordinary? It’s not a mirage, and although it may seem too unbelievable to be real, there is a top-rated geocache nestled somewhere in the vicinity.

Come with us as we sweat our way to this Geocache of the Week, Stonehenge in the Dessert (GC6H1TZ).

Deserts are known to be unforgiving. With extreme weather conditions and water scarcity, you wouldn’t expect to see such a vibrant art installation here. “Seven Magic Mountains” is the name of this colorful, stacked boulder installation, located about 10 miles (16 km) south of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The installation highlights the intersection between the natural and artificial, shown in the exaggerated colors and stacking of these naturally formed rocks.

Similarly, geocaching connects humans to the natural world around them. Every day, geocachers get outdoors and forge new connections with their surroundings.

This unique site is no exception; if there’s one thing cachers love, it’s finding hidden treasures in the most unexpected places.

One cacher, Kris32, found the most unassuming location for GC6H1TZ. But hiding it from non-geocachers was vital to driving longevity, as many tourists visit Seven Magic Mountains year-round. Placing the cache a little trek away from the installation proved to add to the fun for many finders.

With so many unpredictable conditions, wildlife, and tourists that pass through, this cache had to be exchanged for a new container more than once. But no matter how many times this cache morphed into different containers, the one consistent thing has been the stealthy location.

Nestled underneath baby palm trees, you can find this camouflaged container chilling in the shade. After all, even caches need to cool off in such heat!

If you’re lucky, you might find a loaded stache with trackables and swag. Cachers have found everything from fuse bead hitchhikers to super cute swag in the form of minions. For all the adventurers, take note that the listed attributes say the find should take less than an hour, but there are no amenities, and you could come across some slithery friends and creepy crawlers on their own geo-journey.

The cache owner wrote “temporary art in the desert” in the description, as the installation was due to be removed by 2018, but its popularity granted an extension to 2027. So you have a bit more time to plan this cache into your next road trip.
