Granny Square – Geocache of the Week – Official Blog

Here at Geocaching HQ, we love to see the interesting and creative ways geocachers incorporate their other hobbies into geocaching. Just when we think we’ve seen it all, the geocaching community surprises us!

Cache owner, SparkEngine, invites geocachers to share in their love of yarn crafts with Granny square (GC5R6GM). Whether you’re an avid knitting enthusiast or just learning the ropes, this cache is sure to weave its way into your heart.

In a quaint courtyard along a quiet residential street in the Dutch province of Friesland hides the cache container. To say Ground Zero (GZ) is charming is an understatement. Flowers, greenery, and even a shaded bench, encourage visitors to stop, rest, and enjoy their surroundings before undertaking the task at hand—opening the cache container.

Once you crack the code and unlock the cache, an unassuming metal chest, you have a new puzzle to untangle. Don’t worry, whether a pair of knitting needles or a crochet hook is your Tool of the Trade (TOTT) of choice, both, along with the instructions, are provided by the cache owner.

After signing the logbook, you’re invited to create a “granny square” or small crocheted patch. Square by square, SparkEngine adds these to a patchwork-blanket-turned-trackable, which they bring to local Events for geocachers to admire.
