Each week, we highlight a diverse array of geocaches from around the globe. This year was a treasure trove of unique finds, from a birthday cake-inspired geocache in Belgium to a room filled with petlings in Germany and a historic railroad in San Marino. The variety is bound to pique your interest and keep you on the edge of your seat.
We looked at the geocaches you liked most on our blog, Facebook, and Twitter and also considered factors such as creativity, uniqueness, and, of course, good photos to assemble a list of the top 8. Let us know your favorites:
1.) ✊ KNOCK ✊ – GCABKD6
Many recognize this iconic tune, often heard in the form of a knock, but did you know that it could one day help you find a geocache? Come hum along with us as we open the door to ✊ KNOCK ✊(GCABKD6).
Geocachers begin their visit with a short stroll alongside the River Trent in Wilford, a village in the Nottingham district. With the river on one side and the historic St. Wilfrid’s Church on the other, there are plenty of sights to captivate you on your way to the cache.
2.) Das PETling-Zimmer – GC50CRA
Have you ever had difficulty choosing where to begin? This Letterbox Hybrid (GC50CRA) may only have three stages, but there are thousands of opportunities for hints and perhaps fun, too!
A petling is a pre-formed 2-liter soda capsule and a common container in Germany, where this geocache resides. Hidden by the infamous PETling-Mafia, the group got together to create a geocache with so many petling containers it could be a crime.
3.) [BERRY] Galleria Montale – GC9FN88
All aboard! Welcome to the Montale Tunnel, a historic railroad tunnel in San Marino. Open to the public, this tunnel provides learning experiences and recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Join us as we discover the history of San Marino with [BERRY] Galleria Montale (GC9FN88).
Between 1932 and 1944, the Rimini–San Marino railway connected Rimini, Italy with San Marino. Although the railway was only 19.6 miles (31.5 kilometers) long, it included seventeen tunnels. Montale Tunnel, home of GC9FN88, was the closest of the seventeen tunnels to San Marino station. Damage during World War II closed the railway permanently.
4.) Bonus Birthday party! – GC92KZH
With this geocache, you can have your cake and eat it too!
Bonus Birthday party! (GC92KZH), gives you the chance to celebrate your birthday geocaching-style as you complete a series of caches to reach one final sweet surprise.
So blow out the candles and make a wish! If you wished for more geocaching, you’re in luck—there are plenty of birthday surprises ahead.
5.) GeoTour GA52: Heel Gesleutel 2 – GC9223F
Keys not only unlock doors and locks but also stories and memories. This geocache (GC9223F) takes patience and skill to find the perfect key and unlock the geocache; it’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.
Nestled in a quiet little park in the charming city of Huizen, it is one of 60 geocaches in the Garden of Amsterdam GeoTour (GT5B). Upon entering the park and arriving at GZ, a larger-than-life statue casts a shadow on each new visitor. Upon further inspection, this is not just any statue; it’s a person walking with thousands of keys on rings chained to the stilts underneath their feet.
6.) M m m my Corona! – GC9FBMY
Silly SWAG, notorious trackables, and *gasp* spiders! Players often like to discuss the unexpected items they find in geocaches. But what’s the most surprising thing you found as a geocache?
M m m my Corona! (GC9FBMY) is an unexpected delight like no other. With more than 100 Favorite points, this cache is a crowd hit. We don’t need to spell it out for you—creative caches like this are really our TYPE!
7.) Der Weg zum Führerschein 🚘 – GC8NKE4
Geocaching is a highway; we want to ride it all night long! Thankfully, geocachers don’t normally need a driver’s license to find a geocache, but this one is slightly different! So hop in the car, travel to Switzerland, and see if you can pass this driver’s test to find Der Weg zum Führerschein 🚘 (GC8NKE4).
To find this geocache, geocachers must pass a few theoretical tests. Here’s what cache owner JaMaDuLi says about the cache: “Anyone who wants to drive a vehicle obviously needs a driving license. To obtain one, you must first successfully pass a theoretical test, followed by a practical test.
8.) Rock Islands Frying Pan Tree – GC6VVF3
Mission accomplished, treequest! This cache’s location is as unique as they come! This Geocache of the Week is for those with a soft spot for urban legends, abandoned places, and the weird and wacky things you find in the woods.
Rock Islands Frying Pan Tree (GC6VVF3) is located near a noisy highway in rural New Jersey, an unassuming place for such a mysterious cache. Although the actual “Rock Island” is located nearby, it’s obvious how this cache got the first part of its name. Two massive rocky hills rise above the sea of trees, which daring geocachers must climb to claim this cache.
